Lifetime Achiever Award
*****
The UK’s 1st Important Black Historical Documentary Filmmaker.
At 97, Clovis Salmon OBE is a venerable UK icon. In 1954, he left his homeland to help rebuild war-torn Britain. Known as ‘Sam The Wheels’, Clovis is a Windrush Pioneer, cycling artisan, retired minister, archivist, and the UK’s first Black documentary filmmaker. He has documented Black British life and culture from the 1950s to the present day, including the Brixton Uprising in 1981. Clovis’ films feature in major documentaries, venues, and newspapers, and are archived at institutions like the BBC.
They serve as global collective therapy, healing, well-being and heritage preservation, amplifying and validating the journeys and voices of those whose stories might otherwise fade into history, inspiring social change. Clovis’ significant contribution to the bicycle industry is also acknowledged. Honoured with an OBE in April 2024, Clovis’ journey, ‘From The Bush To The Castle,’ reflects unity and compassion, inspiring future generations.
Clovis Salmon OBE Esq. was honoured with a ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’ at the 2024 Power Awards, held at the De Vere Grand Connaught Rooms in London on 24th November. This prestigious award recognises exceptional accomplishments and celebrates the achievements of men of colour.
For over 70 years, Clovis has made a profound impact on both young and old through his pioneering films that have documented the experiences of Black Britons since the 1950s. His commitment to community engagement and equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) is of utmost importance to him, and he is deeply honoured to receive this accolade, acknowledged by @therealfredinwaka , Angela, Selena and the @thepowerawards Team.
Clovis thanks everyone who has supported him throughout his journey. Your appreciation means the world to him.
