At 97, Clovis Salmon OBE Esq. stands as a revered figure and venerable icon in British history. In 1954, he responded to Britain’s call to Commonwealth countries, leaving his homeland to help rebuild war-torn Britain and making a difference in the lives of others. Little did he know that his legacy would extend far beyond bricks and mortar, and that he would become an iconic figure in the Windrush generation and in British society.
Affectionately known as ‘Sam The Wheels’ for his groundbreaking techniques in the innovative construction of bicycle wheels, Clovis is celebrated as a Windrush pioneer, business owner, retired minister, archivist, and is recognized as the UK’s first major Black documentary filmmaker.
His films document the lives and culture of Black Britons from the 1950s to the early 2000s, including the significant 1981 Brixton Uprising. Through his lens, Clovis has given voice to marginalised communities, leaving behind a rich tapestry of human experiences immortalised through his cherished Super 8 camera.
